Module 9_2: Using Brightspace Learning
Management System
I do not mean to change the prompt for this
week, but as I look through my intern course, I can't help but to notice that
it is not the professor that is not utilizing the elements of Brightspace but
seemingly the students. The professor posts rubrics, facilitates
discussions, uses the bulletin board and news areas, gives feedback, has a
grading management system, utilizes the calendar, and more. Observing, I
cannot see what exactly he is not using. However, as I look at student
progress, it is evident that they are not utilizing the resources available to
them.
This screenshot shows the number of logins and
the overall progress the students are making. This is just one page of
many. But looking at this page, I see that one student has 79 logins
whereas another has 9 logins. It is evident that some of the students are
not taking advantage of the resources. If you do not even log into the
course, you cannot possibly utilize all of the features. In my previous
post, I stated that the glossary seemed like a useful tool for students.
However, it can only be accessed by logging in. This has me really
questioning how to get students more involved and ensure that they are taking
advantage of all of their resources in online courses. I am currently
taking a non-cohort course entitled, "Developing and Teaching an Online
Course." In the course, it was suggested that quizzes should be
given more frequently in online courses so that students are motivated to go
through the modules and content. However, this tactic does not work
unless the student is actually logging in to take the quizzes. Therefore, my analysis this week is not of the instructor and the tools he utilizes, but of the students and the tools they are not utilizing.
